Over a competitive career spanning the 1970s through the early 1990s, Gant competed primarily in the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and United States Powerlifting Federation (USPF), earning 15–16 IPF World Championships and becoming the youngest IPF World Champion at age 18. He held world records in all three lifts — squat, bench press, and deadlift — and the total.

Gant also contributed to the sport as a coach and mentor, notably guiding teams such as Black’s Gym to multiple national team titles and sharing his training insights with other lifters.
