Gus Rethwisch is a long-time American powerlifter and strength figure best known as the founder and president of the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL), a federation focused on bench press and deadlift competition. He competed extensively from the early 1970s through the 1980s and has remained deeply involved in the sport through meet promotion and leadership of WABDL.
This workout was republished Sept/2001 from POWERLIFTINGUSA.
In competition, Rethwisch posted notable strength numbers in his era; historical accounts credit him with a deadlift in the 870-880+ pound range and a squat over 900 pounds in equipped competition in the 1980s while weighing around 340 pounds.
